Flight Studio

I’m not sure how many of you out there actually use Multigen Creator, but if you do and you have issues with it’s texturing tools, it’s modeling tools, and would rather use a good 3d program like MAX…there is hope.

Thanks to our newest art intern, Joshua, we might have an alternative to Creator.  It’s a pricey plugin by Bluerock called Flight Studio.  It’s been out since 2004 which doesn’t surprise me.  Playnet has never been accused of using the latest and greatest, and we all know us artists here suffer from not being on the cutting edge of game art tech.  The plugin allows MAX to import and export hierarchical view databases that are the backbone of the open flight file format.  It can’t actually animate DOFs, but the ability to edit  them is there, not to mention MAX’s ability for UV mapping, texture baking, and it’s (miles better) modeling capabilities.

We are evaluating a copy of the plugin now…hopefully, it can fulfill our needs and we can ween ourselves from the Creator’s tit.

    Sounds like slowly you might finaly be getting a decent set of tools to help you do your job!

    Yeah!… this has the value of a big “Friday’s Update”.

    The thing that still confuses me a lot… is how “Open Flight” is used, in our game engine… because Open Scene Graph does also some of the stuff that i’ve read about “Open Flight”.

    But i guess that it’s the same for “granny2″… for the infantry.

    Are “Open Flight” and “Granny2” a layer above “Open Scene Graph”?.

    Man… this game is complex!.

    open flight is just the file format that the game uses for it’s vehicle and static meshes. We don’t have an engine importer for anything else.
    Granny 2 is the SYSTEM that we use for infantry. It’s a “module” that our engine uses for the infantry portion of the game. Player characters basically. It allows the engine to use granny file format (GR2). Open Scene graph is the new rendering engine…different then the game engine.
