Craziness I Tell Ya!

After months of thinking about it, I decided to take on a personal project of mine.  I decided I wanted to create a little Mod for UT3, and I wanted to teach myself UnReal Script at the same time.  Now, what a juggling act this will be.  Let’s see: a total revisit of in game art assets in WWIIOL(changing objects that implemented alpha colliders), sharpening my ability to subdivide surface model with Mudbox, a wife, grandkids, and my constant attempts at bedding Liara in Mass Effect…I am fucking busy (Ash has some sort of wicked witch nose on her or something).

I got started last weekend.  I bought UT3, installed everything, got the patch, set up my modding directory, and scoured the net for tutorials.  Last night I got my first Mutator to work.  granted, all it did was slow my palyer character down in the game, but it worked and I got excited enough to plot out my next task: eliminate jumping.  I found an awesome mod for making it third person, ala GoW so no need to plan that one although I would like to learn how it was done.
Let me backtrack for a second.  I really wanted to start with the Gears of War build as it does a lot of the stuff I wanted in my project mod to begin with, but Epic decided that GoW should not have gameplay changes made to it, so they dumbed down the ability to do total conversion..hell even minor tweaks.  I think you can change game meshes (Actors) and build new maps, but not much beyond that.  So I went with UT3.
Writing code for UnReal script just might give me that lobotomy I was hoping for.  I can model, I can draw, I can even paint, but to write functions, define classes, extend classes. modify ini files, compile, decompile, build, test et al…..jesus!  I knew I should have paid attention in math class.  For the last couple of nights, all I dream about are classes, functions, operators, strings…holy crap.  At least they are all written on Salma’s belly.  That makes it bearable.

I’m not going to give up though.  Like I said earlier, Jump is my next baby step.  I have a test map built already and I have a few minor changes in that I want.  I need to find out if I can incorporate all my changes into one single Mutator, or if I need to have many mutators that I will have to load everytime I want to test the game play.  So many things to learn.  Oh well, the masterpiece will be worth it…muwahhhaaa.

So if anyone has any pearls of wisdom, advice or suggestions feel free to share with me.  I’ll be in the bathroom, swallowing bottles of Tylenol.

    Ah, so your going to end up like one of those early 80’s coders, one who not only writes the game code, but designes the grapcs & sound too!

    Yeah I wish. Maybe in another 20 years? Right now, I need to find the function or class that contains the Jump variable. 🙂
